There is only one kind of henna, and when used for body art appears in a green paste form and it's stain on skin ranges in color from orange to reddish brown. If you come across anything labeled henna that appears "black" or "colored", please Stay Away from it!. If the person applying or selling the "colored henna" product claims the design will stain black immediately or that the black stain will last for 3 weeks or more, it no doubt contains a harmful chemical called para-phenylenediamine, or PPD. PPD can cause a range of disasters from painful rashes, disfiguring scars, increased allergic reactions to safer black dyes, to even more serious conditions such as heart failure and life-long illness. Even those who claim their "colored henna" is safe are ripping you off. The "color" in their products come from weak chemical additives, and while not as dangerous as PPD, they are an exquisite waste of money. The henna base is of poor quality, and you will get better results from coloring on yourself with a marker. So please be warned. If it is not a green paste that stains brown over time, then IT IS NOT HENNA! |
